Acton Arboretum, Acton MA

Our October 21st workshop was facilitated by Cathy Fochtman at the Acton Arboretum in Acton, MA. We were blessed with a beautiful autumn day, which began with a tour of the arboretum.  As we walked through the various gardens: Rain Garden, Crabapple Allee, Butterfly Garden, Herb Garden, Woodland Wildflower Collection, Fragrance Garden and bog (to name a few), Cathy provided attendees with an overview of each garden as well as a history of the arboretum.  After our three-mile walk, we gathered our tools and the bulbs for planting in the newly established rain garden.  The Daffodils, Snowflake and Camassia will make a nice addition to the rain garden with colorful spring blooms.  When we were finished, Cathy graciously offered the extra bulbs to attendees.

From there it was on to Cathy’s home for lunch and the Membership Business Meeting.  Some of the topics discussed included: a summary of the AHTA National Conference, the HTI “Fundamentals of Horticultural Therapy” class which will be hosted by Perkins School for the Blind from November 16th – 19th, the NEHTN website – attendees were encouraged to submit newsworthy events for the “Member News” page, and the HT Activity Guide.

We concluded the day with an awards ceremony, honoring members Judy Murray and Yasuko Voccio for their service to NEHTN.  Judy was recognized for her years as Treasurer/President and Yasuko for her work on updating the NEHTN display board.
